(Tivoli Gardens)
I hate to sound cliché but I've lusted after Denmark for a number of years. The Scandinavian countries have a magnetic pull and, at last, I was able to visit in early December. With the onslaught of problems facing us moments prior to the trip, I think it's pretty safe to suggest that it was somewhere I was meant to go.
On Thursday evening, 22 hours before the flight was due to depart, I realised that I had foolishly left my passport in Cornwall - a mighty six hours and 318 miles away. My carelessness led to a frantic panic and copious phone calls in a vague attempt to contact somebody who would be able to meet me somewhere in the country. Luckily I have a wonderful set of friends who rallied around me and my saviour came in shining armour at 3am, bravely brandishing my passport.

Despite the delays to other passengers due to problems in the airspace, we were lucky enough to be able to fly on schedule and landed in Copenhagen at 9pm local time. The apartment we were staying in was sourced through a website called AirBnB (which I highly recommend!), and located just off of the S-train stop "Amagerbro." Our host was extremely accommodating and had laid out an array of dark chocolate on the coffee table to welcome us home. My sleepy mama felt much too exhausted to go out to a bar to celebrate our arrival so we decided to spend the first evening exploring the quaint little flat and getting an early night in preparation for exploring in the morning.
Determined to experience the best of Danish tourist spots, we headed to Den lille Havfrue or "The Little Mermaid" - the statue upon which Hans Christian Anderson based his tale of the same name. She was surprisingly small but extraordinarily beautiful. My mother, however, didn't register that the camera required a full press down on the button to take a photograph so unfortunately we had to return to these same spots later in the afternoon to retake the photos we thought we had!

Denmark was rife with beautiful places and interesting things. With a keen interest in all things design and architecture, one of my favourite parts was visiting the Designmuseum Danmark. We could not take any photos but it was amazing to see the way that cultural movements have influenced design in concrete form from the beginning of the twentieth century. The building itself is a stunning hospital conversion adorned with the most wonderful marble floors and massive double-height windows.

I fell in love with Copenhagen the second I arrived there. I sincerely hope that I can return soon.
