Having spent the summer living further inland with my family, September has swung around again bringing, with a new term, a brand new home. Unlike last year, from Tuesday I will be living with my best friend, with our other housemate - a wonderful friend also indulging in the pleasures of studying English - arriving later in the week. The staggered transition seems somewhat discordant but, being the first here, it has given me an opportunity to get to know the flat and settle back into Falmouth-living.

After a two day haul, I am finally out of boxes and after much deliberation about the spacing between pins amongst other things which only cause issue to a pedant, I have fallen in love with my bedroom. The lighting during the daytime is a reflection off of the white-washed building opposite which propels the sunshine into the room, and I think I have (just about) perfected the soft evening glow through candles, lamps, lanterns, and - of course - fairy lights.

People often ask: "why 'Today'?" The simple answer is that it reminds me that today is the most important day there is, and I can be no better than I choose to be on this very day. This mantra is one which my father gently delivered the night before I returned to university at the beginning of this year after a turbulent and testing break, and I have carried it with me - both as a conversation I hold dear, and a concise life-lesson.

With limited storage options, I have had to be a little inventive with the furniture provided. As a result I've used this dark wood stool, which looks as thought it might previously have belonged at a bar, as my bedside table as it gives me ample space to put my lamp, analogue clock, and glasses for some night-time reading. I was unsure at first but I've grown to like its rustic feel.

After my first trip to Bodrum back in 2012, I have been on an avid hunt for a collection of Turkish Lanterns of varying shapes, sizes, and patterns. Of course, getting them back in my suitcase has somewhat limited the debacle but after two trips, I am equipped with three complementing designs. Usually these are hung however I prefer them to standalone (albeit upside down, strictly speaking), in part due to the way the bulbous mosaic bodies and contrasting brass bases give them a juxtaposing humbly-regal look, and because they inject a little colour into an otherwise dull white bedroom.

Overlooking Falmouth's beautiful natural harbour, I am filled with excitement at the prospect of inhabiting this little haven. I fear it will be very difficult to leave when we graduate in July 2015 (touch wood).
